Google AI Overviews

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries Google shows above traditional results for some queries, with links out to the sources they drew on. Google states there are no additional requirements or special optimizations to appear in them: a page must simply be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. They are a Search feature, not a separate product, which is why Google-Extended does not opt you out of them.

Eligibility, in Google's own words

Google's guidance on AI features in Search is unusually blunt about this: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary," and "a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet, fulfilling the Search technical requirements."

That is worth quoting to anyone selling an AI Overviews optimization product. There is no separate index, no submission path, and no published ranking guide. Indexing and snippet eligibility are the gate.

Google also notes that AI features may use query fan-out, decomposing a question into several related searches, to surface a wider set of links than a single query would.

Which controls actually apply

The preview controls, not the AI-specific ones:

ControlEffect
nosnippetSuppresses your snippet, in AI features and everywhere else in Search
data-nosnippetExcludes a specific HTML section from snippets
max-snippetCaps snippet length
noindexRemoves the page from Search entirely
Google-ExtendedGoverns Gemini training and grounding; no effect on Search or AI features

There is no surgical opt-out of AI Overviews alone. Every available lever is blunt: suppressing your snippet to stay out of AI Overviews also suppresses it in ordinary results, which is a heavy price. Publishers have argued about this at length; it remains the state of play.

What it changes for a catalog

AI Overviews are most common on informational queries, which in distribution means the pre-purchase research layer: what size, what rating, what replaces what, what is the difference between two materials. Transactional and part-number queries behave more conventionally.

The practical consequence is that content answering the selection question, rather than the product page itself, is what tends to get cited into these summaries. Application notes, sizing guidance, comparison content, cross-reference explanations. Most distributors have this knowledge and publish almost none of it, which is a clearer opportunity than any technical optimization.

Attribution is the awkward part. Clicks from AI Overviews arrive as ordinary organic google.com traffic, so they cannot be separated in standard analytics — see AI referral traffic for what that does to measurement.

FAQPage markup after May 2026

Worth flagging because most published guidance is now stale. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in Search from 7 May 2026 and subsequently removed the feature documentation.

That does not make structured question-and-answer content pointless; it changes why you do it. There is no longer a rich-result payoff, so FAQ markup is now purely a retrieval and citation play: a self-contained question with a self-contained answer is an ideal chunk for a retrieval system regardless of how it renders. Anything written before mid-2026 promising SERP real estate from FAQPage schema should be read with that date in mind.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get into Google AI Overviews?

Google states there are no additional requirements or special optimizations. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet, meeting Search's technical requirements. There is no separate index, submission process, or published ranking guide for the feature.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews but stay in Google Search?

Not cleanly. The available controls are nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex, all of which affect ordinary Search results as well. Google-Extended governs Gemini training and grounding and has no effect on AI Overviews, since those are a Search feature.

Does FAQPage schema still produce rich results?

No. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in Search from 7 May 2026 and later removed the documentation. Structured question-and-answer content is still worth publishing, but as retrieval and citation material rather than for SERP appearance.

Why can't I see AI Overviews traffic in analytics?

Because AI Overviews sit inside Google Search, clicks from them arrive as ordinary organic google.com sessions. Standard analytics cannot separate them from other organic traffic, which is why crawler logs and prompt panels are used to fill the measurement gap.
