The Anglera Index · Retail Edition 2026
Every retailer on the NRF/Kantar Top 100, plus 63 more U.S. storefronts, scored on how well the product data they publish can actually be read by an AI agent. Five pillars, nineteen signals, measured from their own live storefronts — never surveyed, never self-reported, and with no model judgement anywhere in the scoring.
Every score links to the exact pages we sampled, so anyone can check it. The rubric, the weights, the random seed and the full dataset are published, free and ungated — including every company’s scorecard, not just your own.
No email required. Every scorecard is public, including everyone else’s.
Every figure below is measured from the retailers’ own live storefronts on 2026-09-01. None of it is surveyed, and none of it is modelled.
Across the scored list the median share of sampled pages carrying a GTIN that passes its own check digit is 0%. It is the field an agent uses to match a product to the same product at three competitors, and most of these catalogs do not expose one that validates.
Median share of sampled pages exposing an AggregateRating in markup: 0%. The reviews are on the page for a human. An agent reading the markup cannot see them.
30 of 163 retailers blocked or partly blocked an ordinary crawler, and 24 would not even serve their own robots.txt. Bot protection that stops a scraper stops the agents these retailers want to be quoted by.
Median by sales rank: 56 for the top ten, 51 for ranks 26–50, and 57 for 51–100. The spread across the whole list is a few points and it does not run in a line — the middle of the Top 100 scores worst, not the bottom. Whatever separates a readable catalog from an unreadable one, it is not how much the company sells.
A note on what we did not do: 30 retailers could not be fully read, and none of them received a composite score. Scoring them on the fraction we could see would have ranked them above the retailers who let us read everything, because the signals a blocked crawler cannot reach are the hardest ones to earn. That is rule 2 of the methodology.
Can a machine tell what this product is, and match it to the same product elsewhere?
Identity · Identifiers · Attribute depth
Does the page answer what a shopper actually asks before committing?
Descriptive content · Imagery · Ratings and reviews · Catalog consistency
Can a shopper — or an agent — find out what it costs, whether it ships, and how to send it back?
Public pricing · Stock visibility · Shipping in markup · Return policy in markup · Un-gated access
Is the structured data actually valid and complete, not merely present?
Product markup · Required-field completeness · Recommended-field depth · Variant expression
Can a crawler, a marketplace, or an AI shopping agent discover and act on this catalog?
Crawler access to products · AI crawler stance · Product sitemap · Agent surface
Commerce platforms hand some retailers an agent surface for free. We publish the raw score and a platform-adjusted score that counts only what a retailer authored, so the index measures merchants rather than the platform they happen to run on.
Sorted by score. A company with no score is not last — it is unmeasured, and the reason is stated.

Built to be read by machines
It would be a strange index that scored retailers on structured data, sitemaps and agent discoverability and then published its own findings as a web page you have to scrape. So this dataset ships the way we tell retailers to ship theirs: a discovery document at a well-known path, a stable endpoint per company, a declared JSON Schema, and an open licence. No key, no quota, no sign-up.
Give Claude, or anything else that can fetch a URL, the discovery document and ask it a question in plain language — how you compare to your vertical’s median, which pillar is costing you most, who fixed their GTIN coverage since last quarter.

/data/legibility/v1/companies.jsonEvery one of those is a single unauthenticated GET against static JSON. The schema and the framework are endpoints too, so an agent can discover what the fields mean without being told.

These companies are on the NRF Top 100 and publish no public product catalog at all — retailer-owned co-ops, franchise banners that are really store locators, fuel operators, and one very large chain that has simply never launched e-commerce. They are not ranked, because there is no catalog to score. They are listed because “a top-25 U.S. retailer has no e-commerce” is a finding, not an omission.
No e-commerce at all. Ross Dress For Less does not sell online; rossstores.com is a brochureware WordPress site whose calls to action all point at the store locator or the credit card application. There is no catalog, no cart and no product detail page to measure.
Franchise network with no single catalog. Health Mart is McKesson's banner for independently owned pharmacies; healthmart.com is a brand and find-a-pharmacy site, not a storefront. Individual member pharmacies run their own sites, which per the brief are franchisee sites and do not substitute for the company's own storefront.
No e-commerce and no product catalog on the assigned Circle K banner. circlek.com is a convenience-store marketing site: store locator, fuel/loyalty programs, fleet cards, blog and FAQ. The '/our-products' page is prose about beverages and food with no SKUs, no prices and no product pages.
Burlington runs no e-commerce catalog on burlington.com. The site is store-locator plus marketing: there are no product detail pages, no cart and no 'add to bag' anywhere. The closest thing to merchandise is /deals/<department>, which shows photos and prices of in-store items but links to nothing and cannot be bought online.
No catalog of any kind. Good Neighbor Pharmacy is Cencora's retailers' cooperative banner over ~2,000-4,500 independently owned pharmacies; the banner site is brand marketing plus a store locator, and each member pharmacy is a separate business with its own (or no) web presence. Per the brief's co-op rule, a member pharmacy's own site is not a substitute. Separately, the assigned domain goodneighborpharmacy.com is dead: it resolves to 209.235.206.41 but refuses TCP on 443 and 80 (ECONNREFUSED, curl exit code 000) from two independent clients. The live banner site is www.mygnp.com — recorded in correctedSite — and the finding is the same there.
AVB BrandSource is a buying co-op; brandsource.com is a national brochureware/lead site with no catalog of its own. The four 'Products' sections (Appliances, Electronics, Furniture, Mattresses) render only category tiles and a 'FIND A STORE' button, and every subcategory link on them 404s. Actual e-commerce lives on individual member-dealer sites built on the BrandSource Digital platform, which the brief forbids substituting.
No catalog exists at this domain. pigglywiggly.com is the corporate/licensing site for Piggly Wiggly, LLC (a C&S Wholesale Grocers company) - brochureware with no e-commerce, no PDPs and no cart. Piggly Wiggly is a licensed-banner model: each store is independently owned, and the corporate store locator links out to dozens of separate franchisee-owned domains (pigglywigglybirmingham.com, wedigthepig.com, russellpig.com, costpluspigbham.com and many more), plus a third-party shoptocook.com ordering vendor. There is no single company-owned storefront to measure. Per the brief no correctedSite is offered: a franchisee's own site is not the company's storefront, and the separate Piggly Wiggly Midwest co-op is a different operator, not this banner.
No e-commerce and no product catalog. www.exxon.com 301s to www.exxonmobilfuels.com/en, a fuel-brand marketing site: fuel and motor-oil brand pages, a station finder, and the Exxon Mobil Rewards+ program. There are no product detail pages, no SKUs and no prices. The c-store merchandise itself is sold by independent franchisee station operators, none of it online under an Exxon storefront.
No e-commerce and no product detail pages of any kind. groceryoutlet.com is a WordPress marketing site: store locator, weekly circular/ad locator, WOW alerts sign-up, careers, and a supplier ('sell your products') section. Stores are run by independent operators and merchandise is opportunistic closeout buys, so there is no persistent SKU catalogue to publish.
No online catalog and no PDPs. ingles-markets.com is a Joomla corporate/marketing site: store locator, weekly ad, pharmacy, dietitian content, recipes, investor relations. Grocery ordering is pushed to the Ingles curbside/app experience rather than a browsable web catalog, so there is no product page to sample.
No e-commerce of any kind. Murphy USA is a fuel and convenience-store operator; murphyusa.com is brochureware - store locator, Murphy Drive Rewards, business fuel cards, real estate, investor relations and careers. There are no product detail pages to sample, and the only 'product' link on the site is a safety-data-sheet page for fuel products, not a catalog.
No e-commerce. The Big Lots banner was bought out of the 2024-25 liquidation by Variety Wholesalers and relaunched as a brick-and-mortar-only chain; biglots.com is now a small WordPress marketing site (departments, weekly ad, store locator, careers, vendor routing on vwstores.com). There is no online storefront, no product detail pages and no product post type in the sitemap. www.biglots.com redirects to the apex biglots.com.
mygabes.com 301-redirects to gabesstores.com, which is WordPress brochureware: department landing pages (/ladies/, /mens/, /kids/, /footwear/, /home-dept/), a store locator on location.gabesstores.com, and a rewards login on members.gabesstores.com. There is no e-commerce — no cart, no PDPs, no WooCommerce/Shopify markers anywhere in the served HTML. The site links out to a Gabe's storefront on Amazon (/amazon/), but per the brief a marketplace listing is not the company's own storefront, so it is not substituted here.
No retail catalog exists any more. Rite Aid closed its last stores in October 2025 after a second bankruptcy, and riteaid.com has been relaunched as a health-content and telehealth/lab-testing surface. There are no product detail pages, no prices, no cart. Every /peptides/<name> and /supplements page is editorial (benefits, dosage, side effects) with no commerce markup; /shop, /products, /store and /online-store all return HTTP 404. This is a genuine 'no public catalog' finding, not a block.
JOANN no longer operates. It filed Chapter 11 in January 2025 and closed all 800+ U.S. stores; Michaels bought the JOANN intellectual property and private-label brands in June 2025. joann.com is now a 301 to a Michaels landing page. There is no JOANN storefront to measure, and Michaels' own site is a different company's storefront, so no correctedSite is offered — substituting michaels.com would score the wrong retailer.
Convenience/fuel retailer with no product catalog. wawa.com is a marketing site whose deepest merchandise pages are eight category menu pages (/menu/coffee, /menu/snacks, ...) that describe assortment in prose — 'Candy & Gum Varieties', 'Chip & Salty Snack Varieties' — with no item pages, no prices and no SKUs. Actual ordering lives on order.wawa.com, a client-rendered SPA behind Imperva that is scoped to a selected store. Nothing on either host is a crawlable PDP.
No public product catalog. www.sheetz.com is brochureware — a Next.js marketing site whose only internal links are corporate/section pages (/food, /drink, /fuel, /tobacco, /loyalty-program, /payment-cards, /nutrition, etc.); /food and /drink are marketing pages with zero item-level links. Ordering lives at orders.sheetz.com, a client-rendered SPA that begins with 'find a Sheetz' store selection, serves the same 2.5KB shell for every route, has no robots.txt and no sitemap, and exposes no server-rendered per-item URL. There is nothing here a PDP sampler can address.
