GHS (Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals)
GHS is a United Nations framework that standardizes how chemical hazards are classified and communicated worldwide, through consistent hazard pictograms, signal words, hazard statements, and label elements. It isn't itself a law — countries adopt it into their own regulations, so the same chemical can trigger nearly identical labeling in the US, EU, and dozens of other jurisdictions once each has implemented GHS domestically. In the US, OSHA folded GHS into the Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200); its two visible outputs on a product record are the GHS-formatted label and the Safety Data Sheet.
What GHS actually standardizes
GHS defines a set of hazard classes — physical hazards like flammability, health hazards like carcinogenicity, environmental hazards like aquatic toxicity — each split into numbered categories by severity, plus a fixed set of label elements: nine pictograms (red diamond border, black symbol on white), signal words ("Danger" or "Warning"), and standardized hazard and precautionary statement text that must appear consistently once a chemical is classified. Not a law by itself
The United Nations publishes and periodically revises GHS (the "Purple Book"), but it has no legal force until a country's regulator writes it into domestic law, and each one adopts it a little differently — different product scope, different timelines, different revision in force at a given moment. OSHA incorporated GHS into the 2012 update of the Hazard Communication Standard, requiring GHS-formatted labels and SDS documents for hazardous chemicals shipped after mid-2015; the EU implements it through the CLP Regulation. A product classified for the US market isn't automatically compliant everywhere else — the underlying classification can differ by jurisdiction even when the label format looks identical.
Where GHS classification lives in product data
For a distributor or manufacturer enriching a catalog, GHS classification is a defined set of fields, not free text: hazard class and category, signal word, the specific hazard and precautionary statement codes (H-codes and P-codes), and pictogram references. Those fields drive two customer-facing outputs — the physical label artwork and the linked Safety Data Sheet — and increasingly a structured hazmat block in the product record itself, so the correct pictograms and warnings render directly on the PDP rather than living only inside a downloadable PDF.
