GS1 Digital Link
GS1 Digital Link is a GS1 standard that encodes a product's GTIN and other identifiers as a structured web URL, carried inside a 2D barcode such as a QR code, so one scan can resolve to both point-of-sale checkout and a webpage of product information. It replaces the old split between a UPC for scanning and a separate marketing QR code for content with a single, standardized code that any GS1-compliant scanner can parse.
What a GS1 Digital Link URL actually contains
A GS1 Digital Link is a URL built from GS1 Application Identifiers (AIs) laid out as path segments: a domain, followed by /01/{GTIN}, optionally followed by /10/{batch or lot}, /21/{serial number}, and other AI-value pairs. Scanning it resolves through a GS1 resolver to wherever the brand points it — a product page, an allergen and ingredient list, a recall notice, or a checkout price lookup — decided by context (a retail scanner vs. a shopper's phone) rather than by encoding two separate codes.
Why retailers are moving to it: Sunrise 2027
GS1's "Sunrise 2027" initiative is an industry-wide push, not a law, for point-of-sale systems to be able to scan 2D barcodes carrying GS1 Digital Link data by the end of 2027. During the transition, many brands print both a legacy 1D UPC and a 2D code on the same package, and GS1 expects 1D and 2D symbols to coexist for years after the date rather than a hard cutover.
The draw for retailers is that a single 2D code can carry batch, lot, expiration, and serial data that a 1D UPC never could, which matters for recalls, food safety, and inventory accuracy, on top of the checkout price lookup a UPC already does.
GS1 Digital Link vs. a plain marketing QR code
A generic QR code just points a scanner at whatever URL the brand encoded — there's no standard for what that URL means. GS1 Digital Link fixes the syntax: the GTIN and any other AI values sit in defined positions, so a retailer's POS system, a competitor's inventory system, and a shopper's phone can all extract the same identifiers from the same code without brand-specific integration work. That standardization is what lets one code do checkout, traceability, and consumer content instead of three separate codes.
What this means for product data teams
The barcode is only the pointer. What resolves behind it — spec data, allergen and sustainability information, batch-level traceability — has to already exist as structured, current data somewhere in the PIM or master data system, the same golden record GDSN and the storefront draw from. Printing a GS1 Digital Link on packaging before that content is in place and kept current just gives a shopper a broken or thin experience at the exact moment they scanned to get more information.
