The short answer
Plumbing and PVF distribution splits into two catalogs with different data problems living under one roof. The fixtures and finished-goods side behaves like retail — brands, finishes, images, and buyers who compare on appearance and specification. The PVF side behaves like industrial supply — pipe, valves and fittings sold on dimension, schedule, material, pressure rating and end connection, where the wrong specification is a job-site failure rather than a disappointment. PVF specifications are the clearest example in distribution of data that exists, is authoritative, and is stuck in documents. Extraction and unit normalisation is most of the work.

Choosing, by what you're actually trying to do
- You carry both fixtures and PVF
- Per-category attribute modelling is non-negotiable. The two halves share almost no attributes and a single schema will serve neither.
- Contractors call the counter instead of using the site
- Usually because size, schedule and connection type are not filterable. That is an attribute problem, not a UX one.
- You want commerce and content in one contract

- Wrong-item returns on fittings

What makes plumbing and PVF data hard
Two catalogs, one business. Fixtures need finish, style, dimensions and strong photography. PVF needs nominal size, schedule, material grade, pressure and temperature rating, and end connection type. Applying one attribute model across both produces a schema that fails at both ends.
Size notation is a normalisation nightmare. Nominal pipe size, actual outside diameter, fractional and decimal inch, metric equivalents — the same fitting is described four ways across four suppliers. Until those are normalised into one convention, a size facet returns nonsense.
Compatibility is implicit and unmodelled. Whether a fitting mates with a pipe depends on size, material, schedule and connection type together. Buyers reason about this constantly and catalogs almost never encode it, so the reasoning happens at the counter.
Certifications carry legal weight. NSF/ANSI 61 for potable water, lead-free compliance, UL and FM listings for fire protection. These are filter criteria and compliance claims at once, and publishing them wrong is a different category of mistake from a wrong description.
Material grade is where returns come from. Brass versus bronze versus stainless, and which stainless grade, decides whether a valve survives the application. Recorded as free text, it is invisible to search.
Start with the size and connection facets
If a contractor cannot filter a fitting catalog by nominal size and end connection type, nothing else about the site matters — they will phone the counter, and the investment in content will not show up in any metric.
Those two attributes are also unusually cheap to fix, because they are almost always present in the manufacturer's own documentation and simply never got extracted into fields. Normalising size notation across suppliers is the harder half and it is a one-time job per catalog.
